Project Overview

This project focused on optimizing two high-frequency workflows within RockSpoon's POS: item modifiers and split payments. Both workflows introduced unnecessary friction during restaurant service, increasing interaction time and the likelihood of ordering or payment errors.

Working from product research and operational requirements, I designed workflow improvements that streamlined complex staff interactions, reduced cognitive effort, and delivered developer-ready solutions that supported faster, more accurate restaurant operations.

Optimization 01 - Modifiers

Challenge

When restaurant staff customized menu items, accessing modifiers required additional navigation, slowing order entry and increasing the risk of incomplete or incorrect orders during busy service. Because orders were sent directly to the kitchen display system, missing modifiers could result in preparation errors and order corrections.

Solution

Using field research collected by the product team, I redesigned the workflow by surfacing modifiers directly within the ordering screen, allowing staff to make selections without interrupting the ordering process. Required modifiers were clearly distinguished and validated before submission, preventing incomplete orders from reaching the kitchen.

Optimization 02 - Split Payments

Challenge

Restaurant staff frequently needed to split bills evenly between multiple guests. The existing workflow relied on manual calculations to divide payments, increasing transaction time and the risk of incorrect outstanding balances. During busy service, this slowed checkout and created unnecessary operational friction.

Solution

I designed a Split Evenly workflow that allowed staff to instantly divide the total bill by the number of guests directly within the checkout flow. The experience automatically calculated each guest's share, eliminated manual calculations, and clearly surfaced the remaining outstanding balance after each payment. This streamlined group payments, reduced employee effort, and improved payment accuracy.

Reflection

Working on a mature enterprise product reinforced that successful product design isn't always about creating new functionality, it's about removing friction from the workflows users perform hundreds of times a day. Collaborating with the product team to translate operational research into streamlined interactions strengthened my ability to design solutions that improve efficiency, reduce errors, and support measurable business outcomes.
